Moderated Usability Test Case Study

Testing vendor software to see if it fits a company's needs.

And saving them thousands of dollars in the process.

A major utility company was considering purchasing a third-party tool to replace their current enterprise software that allows managers to assign access to applications to their team members.

This replacement would cost hundreds and thousands of dollars, and so we were brought in to conduct a usability study on the product and test if managers could complete tasks with the proposed software.

Notable Participant Quotes

“It feels like there are more steps in [this new tool].”

”If I do it the right way, you make me pay for it.”

“Oh no, I’m gonna take more time now.”

Outcome

Participants indicated that while they thought the new proposed tool was more ‘aesthetically pleasing’ than the current software, it would require some significant learning and training to use the tool efficiently and correctly.

We presented our findings to stakeholders with over 50 usability improvement recommendations, and based on our findings, the team ultimately decided to not move forward with purchasing the tool.

A quick usability study saved the company hundreds of thousands of dollars and the pain of training managers on a tool that did not allow managers to complete their necessary tasks.
