Why did we pick the name “Arcana”?

ar·ca·na

/ärˈkānə/ noun

  1. secrets or mysteries.

When we decided to start a business together, we spent months thinking, testing, and iterating on the name of our business. As UX Researchers who evangelize an iterative process, you would expect nothing less for something as important as the name of our business.

Despite the numerous names we considered, we knew the story behind the brand. Throughout our time in the UX industry, we’ve often been asked to “wave our magic wand” to improve user experiences. User Experience (UX) is vastly misunderstood in the product development world, and this language is often used as a front from people who don’t understand the process or even its usefulness.

We’ve decided to embrace that idea – we enjoy the magical, mystical, and enigmatic. And besides, the idea of having an uncanny power to understand the needs of others fits well with our belief that empathy is essential to human-centered design.

“We help businesses uncover the mysteries of user needs.”

Now, as Arcana, we made it our mission to evangelize the importance of UX, and break down the barriers between companies, teams, and their users. UX is not magic, it’s a carefully crafted process to help teams understand and feel confident they are building the right thing for their customers. It is essential to a successful business, and even the smallest amount of investment can have huge rewards for your business and customer satisfaction.

So we embrace the magic of UX, and want to spread our powers to all.
